In a little over four days and you'll experience history again. We are going to build at least a museum or two and likely some statue to remember Trump, too.
For now scientists are scrambling to save all their work data before they get deleted during his reign. NASA is probably going to take down their servers again to delete or modify (censorship misinformation) the publications. I wasn't happy then when Obama ordered this a few years back but nothing's going to compare to what's coming.

Anyway, I played Space Engineers again and applied (really) old design concepts I did back then for the Akira class but on a new ship design. Just to see what can be done. I've the same complains as before even with mods. Actually, worse with mods since the games code changes every now and then and they get outdated. People sooner or later stop updating their mods etc. So far, limited space and adjustments to the huge block sizes are most troublesome. Not to mention advanced mechanics that don't want to get together or tend to explode (and all for no realistic reason). It's a game so combat/piracy/boarding considerations are a major factor. As a result of that I somehow have hidden (protected) 5 batteries so well I don't know where they are now myself. Laughing I have not been able to find them again after taking the ship apart, too. THIS is troublesome, too! Laughing I have named all important parts so I could find & repair or use the ID for advanced computerized shipboard management so I know they are there.

I been watching DS9,Voyager and Enterprise again now that we have
    Heroes and Icons network. Cool

Ezri was finally introduced again on yesterday's DS9. I always love her first lines:
    "It's me Dax!"
Yeah and she has a lot of difficulty convincing Sisko she's not joking either; I mean it's not like
the first time he's seen a entirely different Dax...

So the paper pointed out today that aside from home runs Edgar Martinez actually has better
    stats than David Ortiz.
Then again not having a World Series ring might also hurt Edgar.

Now Friday it will be interesting to see if the Obama people act like adults when they leave the
White House or will the act like the Clinton people did in '01 and trash everything like a bunch of
    spoiled frat boys.

Haven't been watching Xena since the change of schedule because same time as dinner here,
but have been watching Hercules. Monday:Two Men and a Baby in which Herc and Iolaus
have to babysit for Nemesis, unfortunately the father turns out to be Herc's half-brother Ares( Kevin Smith is greatly missed).
Tuesday:Prodigal Sister Herc befriends a blind young man who is looking for his missing sister who was stolen by a renegade tribe of Amazons. Special guest appearance by Danielle Cormack as
    Effiny Gabrielle's Amazon BFF.

humm...so I was wrong about Sisko's reaction to the new Dax;OTOH it was funny to see everyone else do a double take when she met them for the first time on the station.
Kinda like when everyone met the Linda Danvers Supergirl in the comics: "Didn't you used to be..."

So Hilary has a new book out or rather there is a new book coming out about how and why she lost the election. Simple: she didn't listen to the right people and acted all arrogant as in "We're gonna
light up the skies of NYC with fireworks after moi historic election as first woman president."

Also it looks like the Women's March is only for those who are pro-Choice; any feminist who happens to be pro-Life is seemingly uninivited.

The downside of getting rid of Obama finally is we the tax paying public have to ante up for his family's secret service for the rest of their natural lives.

I guess I'll turn toward Dark Matter when 3rd starts. It seems to be leaning toward Firefly and for some reason the crew character composition is similar to anime (not as extreme) e.g. Sol Bianca.

Looks like she needs to recover money to pay the campaign costs.

As I have presented facts long ago at dual-forum the president costs annually a few times more than all illegal aliens put together. If I remember right 11 billion verses 4 billion for obese people's health care verses 2 billion for illegal alien (data 6+ years ago).
So of course his retirement cost wouldn't be small. And he still can earn more, too.

    -------------

All right I figured out the underlying problem (bugs) of Space Engineers that have been around since the beginning and Keen still has not been able to fix with the latest release despite claiming otherwise. It's simple. The game has been designed without relativity or reference frame to be precise. Actually, I don't believe they were competent in the design stage of the game to begin with, hence, all the problems stem from the basic core design. It's a simple not very farsighted design. Anyway, the problem is that any object not solidly attached is completely independent in the game world. This means that lose parts like rotors, pistons and engineers (player) will be left behind when the ship moves/drifts even if they are inside the ship. Imaging you get on board your car, turn it on and give gas and it drives away from you. So when the ship makes a FTL jump you will be left behind if not seated. Even with magnetic boots on it's hard to navigate aboard a moving ship.

The other complains I had about is the block system. There are two: small (ship) and big (ship) grids. You can't mix parts of different grid sizes. This is for simple handling for the game. But this is all pointless because you still have the same number of basic block building objects (the sum of both grid objects put together). That is because their actual real game world metric size is still different from each other. That's the reason Lego's standard block metric building system is more versatile than a divided system.

To sum it up I doubt Keen will ever be able to fix these bugs unless they start over from scratch with a completely new designed game.

Doesn't sound much good if you're not able to mix and match. It would seem that being able to use
different parts from the different grid sizes would help to make for a better and stronger ship design.
Or is that just my ignorance speaking?

And now Trump is officially the 45th President of the United States. Cool
CBS and the rest of the MSM still don't get it as they were busy trashing the inaugural address to death.
Most ironic moment: Hilary Clinton exiting and CBS blathering on about how she won the popular vote. Give it a rest....please.

So the Raiders are now officially going to apply to move to Vegas. Sin City has gone from having
zero major league teams now to two:NHL and NFL. Still waiting to see when the NBA is going to move there as well.

Post by Almael 1/20/2017, 3:38 pm

    Space engineers
Exactly, you can't mix the large and small grid blocks so the majority of details are impossible. Everything is either large or small. Even the small lights take up a whole large block space (2.5 m^3). For example a floor plate (catwalk) takes up a block space if you build a corridor it mean you can't place a light bulb in the same space and have to build up one more block space above. As a result most people build 2x2 corridors 5x5 m !! Ridiculous! As far as structural integrity goes, well, it's a game so it's not exactly perfect in simulating but weak designs do break up. A lot of the high rated designs use spaced armor and labyrinthine columns and walls. Many such players claim their design doesn't have useless huge space but those waste a lot more spaces and I've seen none featuring realistic internal rooms you would find on real (ocean going) ships. Yes, most do have quarters, lounges, galleys, restroom, engineering, bridge, CDC(CIC), cargo bay, med bay, hangars, storage and all typical layman gamer stuff but everything else is missing.

The only way to mix grids is using rotor attachment which tends to explode and it's not flushed, wasting 1 block size in any direction. There's are mods based on rotors with the same problems.
In order to have multiple rotors and piston acting together you have to use merge blocks (magnetic connectors) to merge the different grids attached on their heads. It's extremely difficult to do because not all merge blocks will activate and they, too, tend to explode. You waste hours just to try this simple procedure.
Out of fear a lot of people avoid using any rotors and piston. You could as well play Dublo, a far cry from Lego. I mean I've created far more advanced designs as a kid then what the game could offer after 4 years of development.
Another update just came out but it's no better still.

    ----------------
My focus is on what he is doing or will do. There's no point to anything passe if it doesn't serve to make better futures.

Anyway, I've had a recent discussion on society. And since I saw them popping up a few time in recent years I would like to bring it up.
Some younger people in social working field have brought up an interesting critic about how we are brought up. For example we are brought up to keep or follow order, stay in line to wait for our turn. And because of that we wouldn't led an elderly person skipping the line (also because all the people behind would complain). I find this argument amusing because I'm pretty certain in non-ordered (civilized) society the weak ones would never get their turn at all. I should note this argument often comes from asians where it's common in society to pay respect to the elderly.

In SKorea there's been a little steer on how Korea's prime air company had been using game footage for advertising their new light fighter.
    https://youtu.be/1SkBx_FbBu8
Meanwhile the north is threatening to test an intercontinental missile that could get over the pond.

And some artist came up with camouflage to disrupt facial recognition and tracking.
    https://ahprojects.com/
It's useless really since most cameras are for security and don't zoom in on faces anyway and those that do target the right places to begin with.

Edit: It's been windy all week. It feels like -10. Can't get out without some head cover. Things are kind of slow for some reason.

The only problem is that there can be no such thing as an 'non-ordered' society since for society
to exist it needs law and order.

Today would have been my paternal grandma's 133 birthday. She was born in Schuylkill co. Pennsylvania in 1884. My grandpa was born in what was then Nansemond co. Virginia in June 1881.

I said exactly the same words about society and law: There's no society without law because it would be anarchy. After all law is an agreement between individuals in order to live together. It funny how some people deny the society they live in and yet claim the very rights they deny.

Well, I've got several people around 95+. Yes, all older than the Queen. It was one reason for my long hiatus and stressful travels. I will probably never see them alive again.

It seems Episode VIII will be called Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Looks like just a title to raise curiosity. I'm positive they won't kill their moneymaking cow. A jedi will always rise from the dead with out without a necromancer. And it's already been set in stone a dark lord can raise the dead.

Gosh the sensational title for a meager weather satellite. I understand this had to be promoted since the Europeans had been leaving North America behind for far too long in weather forecasting but still. Frankly, a 40+ year old Landsat was far more impressive in my opinion. Not to mention the latest generations. After all we've been tracking lion foot and urine trails in the sand for years.

Well it might not be so surprising that we are seeing so many people live into their 90s and even 100.
Better overall care for one thing as well as more people are being able to be taken care of at home
which is, I think, in a lot of ways healthier at least psychologically.

Sadly we had one of our friends from church just die yesterday. She was in the long term care with her husband and had been declining in the last couple years.

As you know working titles are sometimes meant to just be red herrings, so I agree we shouldn't
take it too seriously for now.

Star Wars: Rebels is still my favorite outside of the original movie trilogy.

And speaking of Star Wars they had friggin' George Lucas as a young college student on
DC's Legends of Tomorrow yesterday as a character! Cool
I noticed his dorm room had a poster for Cool Hand Luke. Funniest moment, when they're arguing whether to watch Star Wars orIndiana Jones first and the suggestion:

Meaning you as tax payer don't have to pay for it (unless you are a consumer of food). And it seems after the gag orders to various departments and the cancellation of global warming data presentation a few (hundred) illegalrebelling (department) accounts have been made on tweeter. Of course they belong to people who no longer work for the state.

From what I read on Twitchy there was a grand total of four long time State employees that were fired. They were all probably past their expiration dates any ways.

Interesting the same people who are lauding Lincoln as one of the Greatest Presidents Of All Time
are critical of Trump for being in favor of the same policies or similiar ones that Lincoln and the early
GOP favored, such as tariffs and other protectionist measures.

This is because a lot of the policies Trump is talking about were at the heart of the early GOP, and
every GOP President including Theodore Roosevelt up until the time the Free Traders took over
embraced them all or in part.

So basically Trump is getting attacked for being a 'Fundamentalist Republican' if there's such a thing.

So Star Trek: Discovery is being delayed again. The Heroes & Icons website ran an
article on how CBS' streaming service that's supposed to air it still thinks it's not ready.
As someone who can be a bit perfectionistic myself at times, I find this overly odd. I mean considering the number of years they've been working on the project one would think they would
have it nearly perfect by now(methinks there's something else happening behind the scenes).

The policies may be the same but the times, circumstances or situations are different.
Just for example certain african tribes believe having a lot of children and cows means wealth.
That was true in the distant past when nature was plenty with grass and wilderness. But today when the desert has got hold of the country this hardly is the right course of action.
During Lincoln's time the gold rush was still on, oil just got discovered and used in the new industrial age, tax was only applied to a small number of cases.
In other words there was plenty of resources and space to expand. Today we don't have as much resources left nor the space to expand and lots more trouble at hand.
The working or consequences of past policies may have been forgiving (or rather the small fries didn't matter as much) but not today with our complex web of (fragile) ecosystems.

Star Trek: Discovery is gonna suck unless they rewrite TOS anew. Either way that's where they are hesitating. According to them they need time for tweaking but things are already done.

Evidence that an ancient Pueblo site was built out of “golden rectangles”
    https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/01/evidence-that-an-ancient-pueblo-site-was-built-out-of-golden-rectangles/
Looking at the pictures I have my doubts. Mainly due to the less than precise or perfect construction.
But this is still significantly different from Stonehenge where you can place a circle with pillars anywhere you want. And some star will undoubtedly appear between some pillars and it's automatically guaranteed to reappear there 365 days later at the same. You don't need to do any math to accomplish this feat. Heck, the circle doesn't even need to be perfect because it all can be as random as it gets.
Here the circle center points are unlikely random but still too little for certainty imho.

I have started to retrieve my lost repository of fan translations and scripts. As it stands looks like I can only get about 30% for the time being. Handbrake is finally "complete" and released
    https://handbrake.fr/
It's a video decoder/encoder tool. Perhaps not the best in all respect but used to be the most convenient. Therefore is very popular. Well, encoding is a science in itself but a lot simpler these days as many good techniques have become standard. You won't have to take those into consideration anymore.
If you do encoding choose H.265 (HEVC) as it's the most advanced encoding method introduced in 2013 (if you remember). H.266 is already in the works but won't appear for another 5 years (most likely first by Japanese again). Advanced H.265 and all future encoding will be machine learning based (neural network). Beyond this I doubt there's much more that can be done about compression other than expanding on bigger screen sizes.

On a note the advertising industry likes to refer to AI when they mean statistical, empirical data based decisions. In science AI has split into machine learning and true AI and some minor fields. On another note genetic algorithm are used in most optimizing engineering projects. One reason for super computer these days. And it seems Japan plans to take top again for another 5+ years with their recent chip/system designs.

If anything it points to other possibilities besides dark matter. Even if it turns out to be something other than dark matter it does not necessarily rule out the existence of dark matter. This is science you got to keep all possibilities until it's 100% proven wrong. The reverse is rare.

Got my confirmation for Akame Ga Kill Part 2 today which was interesting since I start with
episode 1 tonight. Later this month I plan on ordering Celestial Method. Saw part of the trailer at Rightstuf and looks interesting.
Good thing I don't do my deciding on what anime to purchase the way Leela did the whole
looking into/not looking into the box thing on Futurama! Laughing Laughing Laughing
I mean a flip of a coin would be a bit too iffy.

That's actually one of my favorite episodes.

Actually the main difference between The Atom and Ant-Man is the entire summoning and controlling
ants thing that Ant-Man can do,thus his name.

My Aunt Betty died during the night she was 100. They say that she didn't suffer or had any pain, so that's good.

Sadly it leaves my dad now as the last member of his immediate family.

They're waiting to have the service in the Spring so two of my cousins can make it.

    My condolences.
Yeah, getting everyone together is difficult.
My relatives are spread all over the country and the world I've never met everyone in one place. Only the oldest generation have ever met them all. Don't even start with the in-laws.

Fighting has become intense in the Ukraine. And since the military started talking about evacuations the western press is pushing for footage and all.
Poor people and at a bad time of year, too. Nato is unhappy about this starting right after trump communicated with Putin.
Iran, using this opportunity, already provocated with a missile test but trump's been silence. So Nato is worried. Well, Obama had just sent a few troops over a few weeks ago so this is a bit assuring.

Anyway, it seems an ancient continent has been found under the sea near Mauritius

From the first news I thought a helicopter was lost but it turns out to be an Osprey. I guess a tiltrotor isn't suited for fast & dynamic changing movement environment. That's probaply the reason it wasn't sent out first to begin with.

The bacon shortage scare turns out to be just exaggeration by people.

But it certain show how much consumption has increase with growing population. Future resource shortages are no laughing matter.

Nothing new on the travelling idea and reminds of a number of researches announced last year or earlier. The new thing is the solution on how to break a solar sail.
    https://arxiv.org/pdf/1701.08803v1.pdf
It's by using the star light pressure from the other stars in the multi-star system. So it's not a general solution.
I guess the general solution will end up being using an electrodynamic tether.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrodynamic_tether
I've provided major research papers on the science to the article so I know any solution requires a huge amount of time and distance for breaking. I'm talking about lightyears here.

Anyway, new video & image program versions have been poping up in recent weeks. Many of which had years in between version. I have some plans in mind on digitizing old analog stuff for prosperity. And I've started trying out new encodings.
Lots of people are using HEVC2 = HEVC/X.265 with 12 bit color coding. Old/ordinary videos use 8 bit. Hi10 bit had been used to improve color quality at higher compression. The larger bits reduces precision loss (but increases data storage requirement). That is because compression, a fundamental idea from discrete math, blurs the original colors, hence, things get lost due to precision.
The difference between 10 and 12 bit is minimal and insignificant to the loss of actual image details. Imho it's not worth the extra effort unless you reduce the file size extremely compared to the raw data (because of the larger difference in color shifting manipulation, hence, requires more precision).
There's also little difference in multi passes for HEVC/X.265 encodes unless for extreme compression or difficult cases.
You should know normal real life TV stuff has a smaller color space than anime. Anime has about a 2 times larger color space consistently across the board. So real life TV sources can be compressed to a smaller size.

    Well she was 100 so...

Snowing again today. Been awhile since we last had any new snow.

Every time some new land is discovered underwater I expect the Atlantis people to come out of their
closets to claim it as some remains of 'The Lost Continent'.
Also expect Young Earthers to claim it as evidence of the Worldwide Flood Theory.

So Japan as designated a bunch of anime icons as Olympic Ambassadors, including Sailor Moon and

A reasonable optimization idea typical for an engineer but it means it requires magnetic shielding. Still too large to be practical.

The Expanse season 2 had started this week and someone at arstechnica promoted it as if they never seen a good story... According to their own description it's like gundam with a secret new "molecule/element etc." found in the solar system's outer region a la yuanon of Seikai.
Well, I have watched most of season 1 and it looked like your typical scifi detective shows from the 90's. Slow paced and somewhat boring imho. And the fights/raids/secret ops indeed could have been from any gundam episode from most gundam shows. *shrugs*

That's on SYFY right? We no longer get SYFY so no biggie.

Best Superbowl ever yesterday. I turned it on every now and then to see the score. When I saw
it was 28-28, i knew the Pats had it. Basically the Falcons played like it was a sprint but the Patriots like it was a marathon and that's why they won.

So Spring Training is up next. Very Happy

This month I am ordering Celestial Method and next month Pilot Candidate.

AFAIG: I have been watching Xena on Saturdays as well as Hercules. As well as the latter during the week.
Along with some of the various Star Trek on Heroes & Icons.
They're into the whole T'pol becomes a junkie storyline on Enterprise.

Yes, syfy. Netflix should have it, hulu certainly does.

Yeah, nice come back there. I wonder if they will get their sixth title next year or the other contenders will give a hell of a fight for becoming the second team to do so. Hopefully, this will be an interesting game cycle.

Ever seen Legend of the Seeker? I never was that interested in it but I heard it was canceled for being less fun as Xena & Hercules.

Looks like polan plans to become an nuclear power. I doubt Putin will let this happen.

Yep I saw Legend of the Seeker when it aired. Ted Raimi had a recurring role in it.

As long as Brady and Belichick are together I would think the Pats have a good chance of more titles.
It's the whole Staubach/Landry and Starr/Lombardi thing where you have the right QB and Coach.

And now the big question is can the Cubs repeat or was it just a one season thing they had last year?

Got part 2 of Akame Ga Kill today and so when I get paid this month will be ordering
    Celestial Method.

Interesting but that next Saturday will be the 50th anniversary of Space Seed and the
introduction of Khan or should I say:"KHAAAAAAANNN!" Laughing

So no surprise about the 9th circuit overturning the travel ban for now. Though since they happen to be the most liberal circuit court in the country a blind man could've predicted the outcome.
They appear also to be the one with the most overturns in the Supreme Court with around something like 71% of their rulings overturned, so looks like Trump made the correct call in sending it to the
Supreme Court. But we shall see...

around 40 right now and icey. Hard to get around town because our town doesn't do much to help
predestrians during the Winter. So you have to be extra careful.

The Seahawks signed Blair Walsh from the Vikings to compete for the kicker spot. I wonder if the good people at the Daily Norseman have anything to say about it. Well have to take a look there when I'm done here.

And speaking about sports: awhile back the people at Twinkie Town were running
a list of Twins fans top and bottom teams. Looked like fun. So my list:

    1.Minnesota Twins
    2.Seattle Mariners
    3.New York Yankees
    4.Texas Rangers
    5.LA Dodgers
    6.Chicago Cubs
    7.Atlanta Braves
    8.KC Royals
    9.St.Louis Cardinals
    10.Pittsburgh Pirates
    11.Oakland As
    12.New York Mets
    13.Toronto Blue Jays
    14.Baltimore Orioles
    15.LA Angels
    16.San Diego Padres
    17.Houston Astros
    18.Detriot Tigers
    19.Philadelphia Phillies
    20.Boston Red Sox
    21.Chicago White Sox
    22.Cleveland Indians
    23.Cincinnatti Reds
    24.Milwuakee Brewers
    25.Florida Marlins
    26.Tampa Bay Rays
    27.Washington Nationals
    28.Colorado Rockies
    29.San Francisco Giants
    30.

1- 10 are pretty much solid whereas the rest I just put in as I remembered sorry can't remember the
30th one. So in other words from 11- 30 it's just in no particular order of like or dislike, just has they came to mind. For example the Rockies would be higher but I didn't remember them until
I got further down the list.
