Very useful screens. The only problem i see - in anime same Abh costumes look different. Their fabric, cloth type etc. Sometimes it's stretchy and tight and sometimes it's like suite made from harder material (millitary univorms). For example - first and second screens here. I'm pretty sure Lafiel wears captains uniform on that one and yet somehow it became very tight compared to this very same uniform but on other screenshots. So which one is the right one?
My only guess is that second screen is the right one. But drawing cloth in such manner (especialy in animation) is time consuming so animators was just time efficient.

Look closer. In the following pics you should see it more clearly.
Lafiel wears a normal officer uniform. As captain or higher she wears a half mantel-like outer uniform. Something like a simple overall for marking the rank than serving as a true clothing.
    Seikai Cosplay Abh-basic_officer_uniform0

In the third picture you can see the differences. Notice the different lengths near the tights and legs.
It also appears the animation staff changed the grey hue to a darker tone in Seikai no Senki III.

Too bad you can't make it out of neoprene... it'd be very attractive IMO.

I know a person that has a large amount of knowledge in the manners of seamstress
or fabric items as she works with some kind of council in the fields.

Need to check that, but it appears the Abh think that a uniform is formal enough for aanything official so there is no real dress uniform for the military. So whatever Jinto and others wear is a privat dress.

As I have seen, he wears the same in Cots, Bots2 and Bots3. In Bots2 the lines seem to have a different color thought. The design is very close to the normal uniform, so I guess it's a dress uniform for nobles (men).
In Bots he and Lafiel seem to wear a 'makeshift' ceremonial half-overall. Here I think these are for imperial territorial representatives, something for anyone assigned to do this assigment in the military.
Lafiel wore always different clothes and since the staff seemed to change the color palletes and designs from one series to the next, I think she got special treatment. So women have probably more freedom in dressing style.

Or might they be trying to show in some instances that Lafiel was a member of the Abriel royal house?I.e. couldn't some of the differences be based on Lafiel's status as a royal (as opposed to imperial)princess?

I try working on that cosplay and never got it off the ground due money and figuring out how make the jacket. However, still going try again this year and now figure out way to make the jacket. I plan use star trek's jacket pattern as guide then after making the jacket I plan use trace paper trace it and then go rework as the seikai jacket. That game plan I just hope it works.

The only thing I can say with 50% confidence is that the triangular shoulders are for nobles.
There are not enough cases to conclude anything for women.

If you want I can sketch up a simple plan for the uniforms. It should help to make an actual design.

    Edit:
Since, I have already some thoughts on the design I will post this simple version.

Very Happy Yes, I would like design sketch for uniform and probably would be big help this time around. Oh, here the website ( wish find it long ago) finally give some idea how make cospaly: http://www.startrekuniformguide.com/MOVIESII2.html and here another link of store that sell star trek uniforms: http://www.roddenberry.com/wardrobe/patterns?p=2 , the jacket after looking at star trek wrath of khan several time, finally hit why don't use star trek pattern. The way jacket is almost same as seikai uniform.

Here you see where Jinto had his pen or pocket on the formal uniform.
    Seikai Cosplay Abh-uniform-pocket01

Well, the Star Trek TMP movie uniform do look alike from the outside, but their design isn't the same. You will need to make modifications.

    Seikai Cosplay Abh-uniform_fabrication2

This is a cost & area optimized sketch of the same design before.
As you can see: If you want a normal uniform you need one blue and one grey fabric sheet.
If you want a captain+ uniform you will need a longer grey and another blue fabric sheet.
To test a design, draw and cut it out of paper. Then put it together with glue or whatever.

The normal uniform is similar to a leotard with a fastener on the back for both men and women.
As underwear men wear a T-shirt and (shorts); women wear a tanktop and panties.

    1st sketch:
bodysuit parts on the left side
    jacket on the right side

    2nd sketch:
I only merged the blue bodysuit parts to minimize area.

The sketches are not to scale and are not accurate for any body size.
You have to measure bodysize and redraw the design to get sewing templates.
Ho to do sheets: look around here http://www.fashion-incubator.com/archive/how_to_make_a_line_sheet/

    Seikai Cosplay Abh-uniform_fabrication21

    bodysuit:
    #1 to #10
    jacket:
    #11 to # 15

    How to use:
    alphabets are connection points
#1, #2, #11 have to be folded in the middle along the violet line I added
#3, #4 are arm cylinders, fold and tie them up along the length
    #9, #10 are half cylinders
#13 is a cylinder (skirt part of the jacket)
#14 is the back tail, the lower part is the tail and free, the upper part needs to connect and cover the back and shoulders.

    Graphic details later.

Yes, like that. (There was a small error in my last picture, I corrected it)

As you can see, the design size is not correct. My design is just a proposal.
#1,#2,#3,#4 should be longer to fit.
You have to take many measurements to draw the right size.
I hope, you know how to do this? It's difficult to find a tutorial on making cloths.

Of course you can use normal designs and cut and sew them to fit.

I never thought I would say this, but you need a doll. Cut a design out of newspaper and dress the doll until you have a working design. It's fast and safest this way.

Some more links with people who might be able to help. As a guy I don't know enough about making cloth.

Post by lymhfeubdach 6/11/2009, 2:18 am

Almael@ Thanks to your hardwork, it got me restart on the cosplay again. You nail some major problems I was having with cosplay, especially the jacket. I like how your sketchs solve problem of sides panels of the jacket and shape for shouders. Now as for the bodysuit, my ideas are different from yours; instead several parts, I was think doing three sections for front and back then sewing together kind like a pillow. However , I will give your ideas try and will use the dolls as guide. Here my plans for cosplay after doing sketches then try make sewing templates in doll size then sew small verison of cosplay.

    You're welcome.
I used to create more complicated designs as a hobby in school so this wasn't hard to come up with.
But cloth have continuous curves so the side part of the bodysuit will have varying widths.
It will look like waves toward the side seam.
If you don't have ideas, you can tap/glue newspaper pieces onto the whole doll body. Then draw the seam lines on it and use an X-acto to cut the cloth out. Cut & Flatten the pieces and redraw the outline of the pieces on newspaper. Try to put the new template on the doll and see if that works. You should get quick results.
    I don't have a doll to play with so I can't help.

And when you got the design, please share the template or sheets.

    Cool
Good, the only things left are the belt and the wrist computers.

I think the belt can be done as shown in the Star Trek link you posted before.

I don't know how to make the wrist computer bands. I mean it needs to be able to strech so you can put your hand through and still be tight to stay in place.
I have a pullover which does have double walled fine-woven band at the wrist, but that's difficult to make at home.
Did Haruna tell you anything, Lymh?

I think it's possible to have a fake working display.

I only thing ask Haruna was about the sword not the cosplay I think. However, Haruna and other cosplay give me a few ideas how do this cosplay, but never follow up on their ideas. Also got to point where don't want ask even more questions, because never though get this done, now moving on we need figure out the measurments for each section. Especailly, the tail part where comes all way from back (length) to front then width from neck to shoulders.

    I see.
IHMO the 'tail' is double as wide as the neck or half the total body width at the shoulders. The rest is 1.5 neck width..
The length is easy, you only need to know where the belt is, and double it for total length.
