In addition to what I said. Firing missiles needs careful 'pin pointing' because they are set to fire in the direction the fleet faces and to a certain point at distance. An enemy fleet moving can avoid the barrage, and a fleet too close can avoid missile that don't hit a ship.

On the left you see an increasing indicator. It show when you can make a barrage. The number below indicates the barrage point that have been collected. Some commanders require more barrage points than 1 to be used. It's better to collect the points for more dangerous opponents.
Edit:
You can have up to 9 barrage points collected, so use at least one to gain more.
You also have as many missile barrages avail able as indicated in the commanders pictior section in the middle. So far I have only seen 3 icons.

There are missions where you can enter a planet to conquer it.
Just click on the planet will do. To leave select the planet or fleet and you see some icon with an arrow. For the planet you must click on the direction to leave appear on the normal map.

I accidentally cleared the stage while training Lap.
Make sure you fail when training. Then just click on yes to save and retry.
Enter an allied planet for resupply and repair, but only if no enemy fleet is attacking it.
Alliance Fleets are badly pounded that I never used a planet. Instead keep enemy from taking one so allies can use it.
Try to keep Attenborough's fleet (far north) alive as it's the best allied fleet around.
It's a good idea to annihilate the Black Lancers.
Story:
A daring campaign by the Alliance council politicians to invade Empire territory and free the Empire people is put to action. A force 30 million men are sent. Reinhard uses a scorched earth strategy to bleed the Alliance Forces supply. Then when the forces have to reaquire the supply from the civilians, he strikes. With moral low the forces are annihilated. HQ orders the forces to gather for a last stand at Amlitser.

You can barely scratch the enemy command units. You can only destroy two of them.
Annihilate the small fleet so that you can savely take the planet. Have Schenkopp in a small fleet for that.
Annihilate the level 10 fleet to save trouble. Surround the level 11 fleet.
Story:
The recent failure of the invasion and corruption cause a coup etate within the Alliance. Yang is ordered to repell the usurpers who are led by Greenhill, Frederika's father.
Meanwhile a demonstration is slaughtered on the planet Heinessen.
Jessica Edwards and 15000 die. It's said Yang did not say a word when he heard of her death.

Story:
The usurpers are isolated on Heinessen the capital of the Alliance.
Yang destroys the Artemis Necless defense satellite and retakes the Planet.
Greenhill is killed by the traitor Lynch. The Coup d'Etat people try to cover up the fact that they were instigated by Reinhard.
The powerstruggle within the Empire ended with Reinhards victory. He has become the absolute power within the Empire. Siegried is killed protecting Reinhard.
Imperial Admiral Merkatz flees the Empire and seeks amnesty in Yang.

You can try to divert the fire but it's difficult with enemy fleets and management of several fleets. Your fleet AI does nothing without you!
Story:
Yang has become too famous. He is under inquiry for conspiracy when the Empire invades.
He is sent to defend Iserlohn. Suddenly the mobilized fortress Geiersburg warps out in front of Iserlohn.
Both fortress exchange fire briefly. Iserlohn's main cannon is hit and disabled. After repair the fleet opens
fire under Yangs direction destroying Geiersburgs thruster. Uncontrolled a part of the Empire fleet is destroyed by collision.
The Empire retreats for now.
