I'm one of those people with a DVD player hooked to a 20 year old tv set.Except for what I have described it doesn't work all that badly and has been noted the quality of the picture image is good enough. 
I perfer buying the DVDs to downloading simply because I like to know that I have it there and don't have to worry about the system crashing on me.
Anyways I think that if it weren't for fansubs online, licensing companies wouldn't have become so driven to streamline the official versions online the way they have.
