In this thread please discuss some of the better/cheaper ways of fixing scratched DVDs.
Aside from going to Radio Shack other electronic stores that is.
To start the discussion off I'd like to know what you all think of the following ways I have found elsewhere on the internet:
    1.Toothpaste
    2.Polish
    3.Brasso
    4.Yellow Highlight Marker
Which is the best and which the worst. Also be free to add your own advice as to what to do for scratches if you have other ideas. Best Ways To Fix Scratched DVDs Icon_farao

It depends o the medium and also your understanding of the medium.
If you have originally printed ones then you need to polish them.
If they are burned then forget it.

The princible of CD and DVD are similar they work on reflection from the substrate which gives a different intensity when writen.
So when the back ground reflector is damaged you could clue another on and pray.

    ---------------
I have made bad experience with newer burners which read older medium with a brighter laser that effectively erase the older data....Only my good old plexer burner is best in recovering if not too much damaged.

From my experiences.. you have 2 methods.

    1. Go to a BestBuy or Blockbuster or whatever rental store you might have around and see
if they will use their resurfacing device on the media. Sometimes no charge, sometimes a couple bucks.

    2. Buy a disc doctor... I forget what brand name they go under now, might be Skip Dr..... but there's several products now under $30 that you can use to resurface or grind away a thin layer of the plastic coating - thereby taking out scratches.

Now I had an old (before they got bought/reformed) Disc Doctor which looked like this -
    http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Innovations-Skipdoctor-Repair-Kit/dp/B00005B9W6

I'd still be using it today if the sanding disc didn't finally loose all it's grit and I couldn't get a refill by then. The newer ones... I only got one of:
    http://www.amazon.com/Skip-Advanced-Optical-Repair-System/dp/B00080O63Y/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257800492&sr=1-22

that model... and it was a piece of junk not worth buying...

So if you want to get one... I'd grab one of the designs (they now make several) that matches my older original style... or grab a motorized one.

You don't need fancy fluids, as the spray bottle is purified/tap water.. and it works on just about every kind of disc based media (not sure on blu ray). But quite handy to have around.

I do have a CD Polisher that I bought at Radio Shack for about $5,it also works on DVDs.The only problem is that after awhile it doesn't work as well as at the start.
I've also tried just splashing water on and wiping with a cloth which works as well.
When I started cleaning my DVDs I used Kleenex some times and other times cloth rags and went in a circular motion. That was before I knew you weren't supposed to use Kleenex and wipe in a circular motion.
Fortunately as the saying goes:"Fortune smiles on Fools,Children and starships named Enterprise."
So far I have only encountered one problem and that has been with two of my Giant Robo fansubs freezing up.After I did the water method with one of them it did manage to get pass the point where it froze up but after awhile it began to look like when you have Satellite tv and it rains really hard and the
picture starts to get distorted and breaks up.

I wouldn't go with hand polishing... you might as well be using steel wool.
The point of having a device is to be uniform so you don't cause problems.
