Arrgh! Screen Scratch Empty Arrgh! Screen Scratch

Well I got a used laptop off uBid, about half retail... so it ain't bad.

But it's got a glossy screen and in the middle / right bottom area of the screen it's got
a diagonal inch or so long scratch. It appears to be surface layer only, or there's 2 little parts of it that may be deeper than the other... but I don't know what to really try to hit it with.

Some online stuff says to try petroleum jelly, some says toothpaste, others say it's impossible.

You guys got any ideas? It's almost invisible when sitting directly front of it and there's a dark screen. It gets more noticeable with white bgs and if you move to the side.

Do you mean real scratch or more like a depression?

Hmm, I don't think there is anything you can do. I'm not sure if the surface is a plastic or acryl matrix. Either of which can be leveled with petroleum, but I won't recommend it because it dissolve there, and hence blur the screen there. This is similar to plastic glue or paint used for plastic models.

I read the same thing about toothpaste for DVDs with scratches.Seems like a lot of people swear by the toothpaste, but I don't know about that as I haven't tried it for anything but my teeth.Apparently polishing with the toothpaste is supposed to rub the scratch out.
Then again you don't want to ruin it any further.
If it were me I'd just leave it be for now, especially if it's not otherwise harming the computer.Seems like it's only a minor distraction.

Part of it is an actual scratch and has depth in the screen. The majority of it is surface layer though, like a really dark smudge that won't go away.

But ML you're probably right, I don't want to dump the $250 to get a new screen and it's neigh invisible if you're not looking for it. I'll sit and see how I feel in a week.

Is screen covered with a film that increase contrast? They put it on like every laptop's lcd these days. If so - you can remove it (you recognize it when screen is very reflective, like a mirror and surface is very smooth - can't judge from photo)
If not - i guess leave it alone - at least you know you can be replaced in future. Maybe someone will sell the same laptop model with burned mobo.

Well so far I've been using it and haven't noticed it, so I guess I'll leave it alone.

But yeah it's one of those high gloss screens that you can see yourself in.
Doubles as a bathroom mirror I guess. ^_^

I did get about 60% of my programs installed, then Vista auto downloaded SP2, which then crashed the system and it wouldn't even boot into windows safe mode. Looked like some kind of driver corruption to me. So back to factory setup it went..... guess what I've been doing all day today....

I already have my old laptop doing that... and I have no HD tvs.
Moved the broken laptop to the media cabinet and ran a wireless keyboard.

This seems to be a corruption of the first sector (boot), which is rare.
If it was sold because of that then it should not have worked either or the seller was good in restoring. I wonder if it could means something else like a`boot virus.

Thankfully 2.5" HDDs are cheap these days - how large is the one installed atm? You probably wanna upgrade it anyway Smile And the old one can be used for storage in 2.5" USB rack.I had similar display story recently - i wanted to buy a good used Tablet PC for just 250$ because it's screen cover was cracked - a single vertical line, almost invisible. It was just a cover thought and could be replaced, i should have bought it, but i feared i'd simply couldn't switch from wacom tablet + 30" screen and i don't realy need laptop as portable device - communicators are the best for it.
